EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fourth-graders at Eastchester's Anne Hutchinson Elementary recently helped make bag lunches for Hope Community Services in New Rochelle.

The volunteer effort was part of an annual tradition that began in 1999. The students collected donations in the fall to pay for supplies and helped feed 150 clients at Hope Community Services this year. Representatives said the collections have totaled more than $5,000 since the program began.

"Parent volunteers help set up and run the event making it easy for the students to make the sandwiches in an assembly line style," representatives said. "In addition, the children decorate the bags for an extra touch."

Teacher Kati Curry, who spearheaded the effort, said the hands-on work "gives the students a meaningful experience in assisting others."
