BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- The students of St. Joseph School in Bronxville sent care packages to 68 soldiers at Camp Marmel, Afghanistan, for Christmas.

Planning began in early October with the children bringing in items to send including snacks, toiletries, books and warm clothing.

In mid-October the students needed to raise $1,100 to ship the boxes so the fifth-graders held two bake sales that successfully raised $400.

Then the entire school dedicated their “Dress Down Day” at the end of the month to the shipping cost which raised another $626, and parishioners of St. Joseph’s Church donated $300 as well as items for the care packages.

In total the students raised $1,326. What money wasn’t used for shipping went toward purchasing more items.

Homemade bookmarks and individual letters from the kids were also included.

The school has received many emails and letters of thanks from the troops along with the flag flown over Camp Marmel on Christmas Day.
