BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Entries for the first-annual "Sarah Awards" -- the Sarah Lawrence International Audio Fiction Awards -- are in, with nearly 200 entries from writers, producers, sound artists, musicians and other entrants. An awards ceremony will be held Friday, April 1, at WNYC New York Public Radio's Greene Space, in Manhattan.

The awards will be hosted by Glynn Washington, creator of "Snap Judgment." Winners will receive $3,750 cash prizes and their works will be aired on the Sarah Awards-associated podcast, "Serendipity," as well as a special broadcast on the NPR member station KCRW.

Sarah Lawrence College, which is renowned for creative approaches to education, including a strong focus on writing, launched the competition in July, as part of its mission to inspire intellectual curiosity and experimentation.

"We see the Sarah Awards as an important development in the revival of radio drama but re-defined for a new generation of listeners," said Ann Heppermann, co-founder of the awards and a member of the Sarah Lawrence writing faculty. Heppermann's own stories have aired nationally and internationally on NPR, the BBC and numerous other shows. "By using the term 'audio fiction,' we hope to expand the concept of narrative fiction made for the ear."

Heppermann, a documentary artist, reporter, and producer, said she and awards co-founder Martin Johnson, creative director at Ljudbang productions, in Stockholm, Sweden are excited about the prospect of judging the entries.

In addition to Heppermann and Johnson, the panel of judges includes

  • Rick Moody, an author-musician whose albums include "Unspeakable Practices with Kid Millions of Oneida"; Sarah Montague, an award-winning public radio and documentary producer;
  • Eleanor McDowall, senior producer at Fallen Tree Productions;
  • Tim Hinman, a British-born radio producer who is co-founder of the radio features show "Ultrasound"; and
  • Shannon Cason, writer and storyteller, and host of WBEZ’s "Homemade Stories" podcast.
