The event was started in 2002 as fundraiser, when the Atlantic District President and Bishop David Benke, was brought up on charges of heresy, for praying at Yankee Stadium with non-Lutherans after Sept. 11. The charges were eventually dropped and the event now honors those who witness their faith in public.

This year’s honorees included Brad Hewitt, the president and CEO of Thrivent Financial; Susan Hewitt, the executive director of the Franklin Community Development Center; Rev. Tilahun Mekonnen Mendedo, the president of Concordia College in Alabama and Joel Wilson, a member of the board of directors of Valparaiso College.

The choir entertained those attending the luncheon, and received a standing ovation.

“There was no hesitation, everyone quickly stood up for a standing ovation for the wonderful choir,” said Rev. Scott Geminn, associate pastor at the Village Lutheran Church.

James Dhyne, principal of The Chapel School, was also appreciative of the performance.

“They did a wonderful job, and we could not be more proud of how well they did and represented The Chapel School,” he said.

The Chapel School Choir consists of students in grades 3-8 at The Chapel School. Admittance into the choir is by audition. The choir has an intense performance schedule throughout the year. Venues have included Village Lutheran Church and The Chapel School, Concordia College - New York, Relay for Life, Celebrity Chef Cook-off at Trotter's in White Plains, Shea Stadium, Citi-field and the Bronxville Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
