As is typical for Bronxville, the school year begins with Labor Day, and the last day for students is close to Regents Rating Day, which is set by the state Education Department.
Vacations and conference days are then organized around the way holidays fall in any given year. The collective bargaining agreement with the Bronxville Teachers' Association calls for 182 days for students and 185 days for teachers, including three Superintendent's Conference Days.
The contract further stipulates that school shall not begin before Labor Day, which is Sept. 7 this year.
Quattrone said he would have preferred to open the school earlier for both students and teachers and described related options.
Board comments focused on the desirability of a long weekend in the fall, facilitating college visits.
Other factors are Election Day and the start of school sports before the school year.
