Bronxville Residents To Vote On School Bond

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- The date is rapidly approaching for Bronxville residents to decide whether multimillion-dollar renovations to school buildings are worth the tax increases.

Bronxville residents will vote Oct. 2 on the school district's proposed $10 million-plan to renovate a middle school science lab, Gwinn Hall and the auditorium, among other infrastructure repairs and restorations. The referendum will decide if the district can issue $4.5 million in bonds to fund the plan. Of the remaining $5.5 million, $3 million would come from fund-raising and $2.5 million would come from construction reserves.

"It's an opportunity for the citizens of Bronxville to have a direct impact on the future of their school, no matter which way they vote," said Assistant Superintendent Dan Carlin. "It's going to have an impact on the school for the kids, and on homeowners' taxes for years to come."

If the plan passes, taxes on homes valued at $1 million would increase by $127 for the 15-year life of the bond, while $2 million-homes would pay $252 a year. According to Carlin, 75 percent of Bronxville homes are valued at $2 million or less.

The plan includes $2.1 million to upgrade middle school science labs, $7.5 million to renovate the auditorium and about $368,000 for "high-priority infrastructures," including sidewalk and roof repair, ventilation and aging exit lights, Carlin said.

Residents can expect a newsletter outlining the referendum to be sent around Sept. 19, said Bronxville School Clerk Connie Lourentzatos, but an electronic version of the newsletter will also be available online. Additional information regarding the capital plan can be found here .
