BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Several members of the Village Lutheran Church – Alyssa Joerz, Rachel Primavera, Deb Reiss, Jenny Resiliac and Natalie Vidal – went on a mission trip Aug. 2-10 to Nicaragua, sponsored by Concordia College and organized by Bridges to Community.

The church had a Mother’s Day plant sale, raffled off gift baskets and used donations from members of the church to help finance the trip.

“Our mission is, ‘to know, live and share the love of Christ,’” said the Rev. Robert Hartwell, senior pastor at Village Lutheran. “We were happy to support our sisters as they lived out this mission in Nicaragua.”

Bridges to Community is a local, non-profit group, with goals that are two-fold. The organization’s actions are set to improve lives in impoverished developing countries and communities, and to make volunteers aware of the conditions and how others can help. Village Lutheran Church’s mission group stayed in a small community close to Siuna, Nicaragua.

“Nicaraguans are very welcoming, eager to share their culture, and I was amazed by the belief in prayer and communal life in the village we were in, called Tadazna,” Resiliac said.

The group assisted in building a library that will help the area families become more educated. Previous projects there were a school and a health clinic.

“It was an awesome experience and being there with the group made me feel a rare sense of true happiness,” Resiliac stated. “It will forever be engraved in my memory.”

Village Lutheran Church and The Chapel School are at 172 White Plains Road. For more information about the church and its programs, call 914-337-3202 or visit the website at
