The program has a new coordinator, Regan Allan. She is a graduate of the 10-week free course.
The new session has room for 25 to 30 participants and begins with an all-day retreat Saturday, Jan. 21.
The program welcomes not just parents, but grandparents and caregivers of kids in Stamford schools, said Matthew Quinones, CEO at Stamford Public Education Foundation.
The foundation secures the funding, partially from the state of Connecticut and through private donations, he told Daily Voice.
There are many "success stories" from the program, like Allan, a former educator and community leader with such organizations as Stamford Youth Foundation, International MOMS Club, and Stone Soup Resource Expo.
"Last year a veteran's wife took the classes and as her project she paired veterans and youth for what became the First Light Project to advocate for needs of their children," he said
“For 20 years PLTI has been delivering a meaningful service to the parents and families in Stamford’s public school district," Quinones continued.
"We are pleased to integrate PLTI into the SPEF spectrum of services that are provided to the students, families and teachers in Stamford’s public schools," he added.
PLTI was created by the Connecticut Commission on Children.
A statewide family civics initiative, its mission is to improve the lifelong health, safety, and learning of Connecticut’s children by helping parents and others who care about children develop the leadership skills to make real change in schools, communities and state and local government.
The graduates have gone on to serve in public offices, such as Stamford boards of education and representatives.
In addition, programs, non-profit organizations, scholarships and lead community initiatives grew out of the program. The Community Conversation About Education is an example.
Following the Jan. 21, retreat, classes will meet Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Stamford Government Center.
Dinner, childcare, and homework help will be provided for kids five or older.
