FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Cheered on by his boisterous supporters, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump attacked his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and the media in a campaign rally Saturday night at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

And yes, he promised that the wall would be built along the Mexican border.

"Yeah, we are going to build the wall, don't worry," he said as the crowd erupted in cheers of support.

The attacks thrilled the crowd member, who descended on the campus of Sacred Heart University on a sweltering day that eventually gave way to pouring rain.

"It's a Saturday night in Connecticut ... and what's better than being at a Trump rally," he said to his supporters.

Trump also blasted his Democratic opponent as "crooked Hillary," a comment that got a chant of "Lock Her Up" going, and he accused her of being beholden to hedge fund operators. He slammed the Democrats for losing jobs, especially Malloy, whom Trump blamed for losing General Electric. The global giant is moving its headquarters from Fairfield to Boston.

"We are going to bring jobs back to our country," Trump said.

He said he knows how the political/financial system works as he called himself a one-time "insider" who became an outsider the minute he decided to run for the Republican nomination for president.

He couldn't resist tweaking his ex-Republican opponents in what originally was a crowd of 17 hopefuls, including Trump, last year.

"I was told this was the most talented field in Republican history and here we folks, here we are," Trump said to more cheers.

He was scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m. But he came out on the podium at 8:04 p.m. and he finished his speech at 9:09 p.m.

Trump made regular attacks against the media, accusing them of distorting his words and calling them garbage and sleazy, much to the delight of his audience. He threatened to revoke the credentials of the New York Times from his campaign just as he did with the Washington Post, although he said he might relent with the Post.

"I banned them about two months ago, maybe I will let them back in," he said.

There were also attacks on President Barack Obama, with Trump accusing him of creating policies that led to the rise of ISIS and calling him the MVP for the terrorist group.

He also slammed Obama for doubling the national debt while saying the president has done nothing to repair the country's aging infrastructure.

As Trump's speech progressed, a steady of trickle of people began leaving the steamy gym even as the candidate was boasting about the large crowd he had attracted. By 45 minutes into the speech, the back of the gym was emptying out quickly as people who had been in the gym for hours fled the heat.

At one point, Trump boasted about his business experience, pulling out a copy of an article that said he had played a large part of the revitalization of New York City. He compared that to what he said the U.S. government is doing, pointing to Veterans Administration hospital under construction that is over budget and past deadline.

"Wouldn't it be great if our country could be on time and under budget?" Trump said.

Police escorted out a couple of protesters before Trump arrived on stage and a couple more during the speech. But one protester in particular caught Trump's eye.

"You can get her out, get her out," Trump said, before joking, "She looks like Hillary. Hillary is that you?"

He also urged his supporters to get out and vote on Nov. 8 to ensure his victory.
