Darien Wreath-Laying Ceremony To Honor Fallen Veterans

DARIEN, CONN. -- There are 2,184 veterans buried in Darien’s Spring Grove Cemetery, and now -- thanks to local collections and the generosity of an anonymous donor -- a wreath can be placed on every one of their graves.

Veteran John Driscoll and Boy Scout Michael Parkhurst lay one of seven ceremonial wreaths in honor of the different branches of the armed services at the 2014 Wreaths Across America event in Darien.

A “Wreaths Across America” ceremony set for noon Saturday, Dec. 12, at the cemetery. Anyone interested in helping place the wreaths is asked to come early, at 11:30 a.m.

The cemetery is located at 41 Hecker Ave.

The Darien cemetery is one of three designated official veterans cemeteries in Connecticut; the other two are in Middletown and Rocky Hill.

Darien’s event is being conducted simultaneously with the wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on the same day.

The Coastal Chordsmen, a men’s a cappella group, will perform seasonal music and also sing the National Anthem.

Raising funds to buy the wreaths were members of Darien’s Monuments and Ceremonies Commission. They partnered with several Darien civic groups including: Good Wife’s River DAR Chapter; the Masonic Club of Darien; the VFW; the DHS Support Our Soldiers; and Scout Troops. Many Darien businesses also generously donated, organizers said.
