This month Cub Scout Pack 38 will collect broken, used or unwanted crayons at locations throughout the borough.

The boxes can be found at St. Mary’s School, Lenox School, Lincoln School and Pompton Lakes Library.

The collected crayons will be recycled into new ones.

The goal is to keep crayons out of landfills. The wax from crayons is not biodegradable and will not break down, leaving a waxy sludge in landfills.

Ashley Monochello, children's librarian in Pompton Lakes, said the Scouts often work together with the library. Some other Scout drives held at the library include mittens and pet food.

"I think it's definitely a great relationship to have," Monochello said. "We're always happy to help the Scouts out and they're trying to help out the community. It's great we can work together to do this."
