The Old Post Road Area Association recently paid to post a series of signs near Old Post Road to let visitors know when they are entering the area. The neighborhood was officially classified a historic district in 1963 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
“The mission of our organization is to protect the historic character of the neighborhood, and also promote a sense of community,” association president Pete Petron said Friday. “And we think these signs, we do both.”
The Old Post Road was once part of the system of roads that linked Boston to New York, also referred to at various points in history as the Kings Highway and the Boston Post Road. A Colonial-era post box still sits on the edge of the Old Town Hall Green dating to the street’s time as a postal route.
Many of the buildings in the area date to the Colonial era, including the Old Academy, the Sun Tavern and the Burr Homestead. Homes along Old Post Road also display a mix of historic architectural styles, such as Georgia Colonial, Federal Greek Revival and Victorian. Many survived the British burning of the town during the American Revolution.
The association worked with the town’s Public Works Department and the Historic District Commission to plan the signs and work on their placement. Currently, three signs are at the entrances to the Old Post Road Historic District, with more coming by the end of the year.
“One of the attributes of Fairfield is our history, our culture, our heritage. This is a way to show that off,” First Selectman Michael Tetreau said. “We want everybody who comes to town to know what’s special about Fairfield.”
