LEWISBORO, N.Y. When the doors opened last week for the first day of school, the start of a new academic year in the Katonahn-Lewisboro School District brought with it an array of new programs and classes for the students and faculty.
According to Superintendent Paul Kreutzer, the 2012-13 school year will introduce the implementation of the new Common Core standards. The standards are designed to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.
The four elementary schools will introduce a new science program and have extended the Response to Intervention program to include math. The program is a process in which a student's progress is closely monitored and additional instruction is supplied for those who are struggling. Additionally, Kreutzer says, the progress reports will now be made available on the Katonah-Lewisboro Infinite Campuss parent portal (http://www.klschools.org/resources/infinite-campus-parent-portal). At John Jay Middle School, the program will be implemented in grade six.
John Jay Middle School also will begin piloting aspects of the Professional Learning Communities model, which is designed to complement the schools team-planning structure, in which the teachers have a common planning period each day. Middle school counselors will work with teachers to add new character education components to the curriculum.
At the high school level, Kreutzer says a new Social studies course, entitled Pop Music and History has been added, as has the new world language course, Conversations in Spanish. AP Euro is now available to 10th-graders and painting is being offered again. The Latin program has grown from five classes to eight.
