Spring Concert Features Harrison 7th-Graders

HARRISON, N.Y. – Music flooded the auditorium and halls of Louis M. Klein (LMK) Middle School as musical groups took center stage for the school’s annual spring concert.

The 7th-Grade Orchestra, under the direction of Alanna Macky, began the festivities. It was followed by the LMK Singers, a group consisting of students from all grades in the school, directed by Ellen Vassallo, performing classics such as “Over the Rainbow” and The Beatles' “In My Life.”

After the 7th-Grade Band, under the direction of Robert Sachs, performed the theme song from Sylvester Stallone’s classic “Rocky” movies and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the 7th-Grade Chorus sang a medley of Michael Jackson songs, which were arranged by Chorus Director Cris Spinner.

“We meet with the kids every other day where they learn the music, then practice at home,” Spinner said. “It's so important, because music helps nuture their creative and intellectual sides and they find something out about themselves. I see amazing things for them in the future.”

This was Spinner's first year directing the 7th-Grade Chorus at LMK; she's spent the past 25 years at Harrison Avenue School. Spinner said the opportunity has allowed her to explore more-challenging musical pieces, since the students are older.

“It speaks to the kids’ confidence that they can get up there and do this,” Spinner said. “They realize they are part of a larger project, which helps boost their self-esteem. It’s wonderful.”
