Wilton Y Wahoos Splash to State Title

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton Y Wahoos crushed the field to win the Connecticut Short Course Age Group championships at Wesleyan University.

The Wahoos totaled 4,149 points to win by 712 points in the 51-team, four-day meet.

The Wahoos were represented by 54 swimmers competing in 215 individual and 44 relay events. They compiled 162 best times in the process while the Senior contingent saw many new best times and new YMCA national qualifying times as well.

Many Wilton swimmers put in standout performances at the event. Scoring points in the 10-and-under category was Richard Nolan, who came in fifth in the 9-10 boys individual high point by placing second in the 100 breast, third in the 200 individual medley, fourth in the 50 breast, fifth in the 100 back, sixth in the 500 free and ninth in the 100 free.

Emma Babshak placed fifth in the 100 butterfly, eight in the 500 free and 11th in the 50 fly. Teammate Sophie Sudano also swam best times and placed sixth in the 50 back. Taylor Loud finished strong to place 16th in the 50 back and 17th in the 100 breast. Ellen Holmquist, Morgan Dill, Joo Joo Hume, Nate Snyder and Rory Hess all put in strong performances in the 10-and-under category.

The 10-and-under boys 200 free relay comprised of Richard Nolan, Brandon Berger, R.J.Welch and Robbie Constatine came in first place.

Competing in the 11-12-age group, Emma Kaufeld placed third in the 11/12 girls distance high point by placing third in the 100 and 200 free, sixth in the 100 IM, seventh in the 200 free and 500 free, and eighth in the 200 IM. Kyle Wilson placed eighth in the 13-14 boys high point scoring and came in third in the 100 IM, fourth in the 50 breast, fifth in the 200 breast and 200 IM, sixth in the 100 breast, and seventh in the 50 back.

Teammate Will Suchy placed seventh in the 11/12 boys distance high point and placed seventh in the 100, 200 and 500 free. He also placed 11th in the 200 back and 200 fly and 12th in the 100 back.

Robby Giller racked up points by finishing fifth in the 100 free, sixth in the 50 free, seventh in both the 50 breast and 100 IM, eighth in the 100 breast and 10th in the 200 IM. Jack Lewis took 12th place in the 500 free, 50 breast and 100 breast, 13th in the 200 breast and 14th in the 200 IM. Matthew Martin posted a best time and came in 14th in the 500 free. Ally Batter, Stephanie Xie, and Ryan Looney had impressive swims in the 11/12 age group.

Strong performances were had by the girls 13-14 group. Leading the way was Maggie Kaufeld, who won both the 1,000 free and the 1,650 free, came in third in the 500 free, seventh in the 200 fly and 12th in both the 200 free and 400 IM. She also placed second in the 13/14 girls distance high point awards.

Courtney Gilroy placed third in the 200 breast, sixth in the 100 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM and 17th in the 500 free. Brooke Hendee had strong swims to finish sixth in the 200 breast, 12th in the 100 breast and 15th in the 200 IM. Linsey Cooney swam to an eight place finish in the 100 breast and 15th in the 200 breast. Emma Holmquist placed 10th in the 200 breast, 15th in the 400 IM, 16th in the 100 breast and 18th in the 200 IM. Rounding out the group was Julia Lewis, who finished 13th in the 400 IM, 15th in the 100 breast and 18th in the 200 breast. Maddy Srivastava and Katrina Trentos bettered their times in the 13/14 group.

Swimming for the 15-18 age group was Chris Wilson, who placed eighth in the boys distance high point award. He scored points by placing sixth in the 1,650 free, 13th in the 1000 free and 16th in the 400 IM. Teammate Mason Molina placed 11th in the boys high point scoring and also came in fifth place in the 1,000 free.

Bob McDowell helped the team by placing eighth in the 200 back and 12th in the 100 fly. Callum Breene had a great finish to place seventh in the 100 back. Jack Abbott had a strong finish to place 12th in the 200 fly. Hannah Armstrong, Adam Damon, Daniel Hernandez and Max Bloom posted several best times in the 15-and-over group.
