Former Scarsdale Contractor, Benzenberg Dies at 96

SCARSDALE, N.Y. - Alfred Carl Benzenberg, formerly of Scarsdale, died Jan. 11 in Rye at the age of 96.

Born June 16, 1915 in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Charles and Louise Benzenberg. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and then joined his father in a contracting business that he eventually led.

During World War II, Benzenberg served as a naval draftsman for the shipbuilding firm Gibbs & Cox. He'd help convert luxury liners into troop and hospital ships. Although not trained as an architect, he managed to design and construct the first of his family's three homes in Queens, N.Y.

He then constructed a home on Underhill Road in Scarsdale, where his family lived for more than 35 years, and then a home on Palmer Avenue in Sleepy Hollow. Specialized in institutional contracting, Benzenberg counted Columbia University, The Trinity School and St. Francis of Assisi Church as his clients.

In his later years, Benzenberg turned his talents to wood carving where he'd craft waterfowl and paint them in great detail.

He is survived by his daughters Diane (James) Geotz of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Claudia (Guy) Scalzi of Manhattan, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by Martha Irene Benzenberg, his wife for nearly 65 years.

Visitation will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Graham Funeral Home in Rye. A service will immediately follow at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment at Cypress Hills Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Osborn, 101 Theall Road, Rye, N.Y. 10580.
