The poll showed that 43 percent of Americans supported Christie while 42 percent backed Clinton.
Clinton enjoys a much more sizable lead against other projected Republican candidates, including a 9 percentage point lead over Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and a 15 percentage point lead over Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, according to the national poll.
"It's a long way off and no one is officially a candidate yet, but the Hillary Clinton-Chris Christie race to the White House is neck-and-neck before the campaign even saddles up," Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute said in a statement.
"Sen. Rand Paul, Vice President Joseph Biden, those other guys better get cracking or they might as well head back to the stables," he said.
According to the poll, 48 percent of independent voters said they would vote for Christie versus 32 percent for Clinton.
Clinton, however, was stronger among women, beating Christie 48 percent to 39 percent, according to Quinnipiac.
