WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel was re-elected in the 16th District after being challenged by Republican Joseph McLaughlin and Green Party member Joseph Diaferia, according to unofficial election results.

Engel had 68 percent of the votes in Westchester -- 73,291 -- compared to McLaughlin 32,615, according to unofficial results.

"I want to stand with the president and make sure Medicare isn't turned into a voucher system. I want to make sure the middle class doesn't bear the brunt of any tax increases and that we grow our economy from the middle class out, not the millionaires down," Engel said "The president's victory shows that the country wants to go in the direction of helping the middle class to make jobs grow. The president inherited a terrible hand, and it took four years to get out from under it. I think the next term will be very positive."

The 16th District encompasses Scarsdale, Eastchester, Bronxville, Rye city and town, Mount Vernon, Pelham, Hastings-on-Hudson, Ardsley, Yonkers, and a portion of the north Bronx.

Engel represented the 17th congressional district for 19 years before redistricting shifted his territory to the 16th District. He replaces longtime Congressperson Nita Lowey. Engel has championed energy independence, affordable housing, healthcare and education reform in the area during his time in office.
