WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A third Democrat has joined the race for Westchester County Executive in 2017, and it's a familiar name.

David Spano, the son of former County Exec Andrew Spano whom the younger Spano memorably challenged for the position in 2009, announced in Yorktown on Wednesday that he's throwing his hat in the ring. Andy Spano served as county exec from 1998 until 2010. He was upset by Astorino in November 2009.

The Democratic nominee will face two-term incumbent Rob Astorino, a Republican, in the November election.

The younger Spano's announcement comes less than a week after State Sen. George Latimer of Rye announced he's entering the race, as first reported by Daily Voice. Latimer said he will not force a September primary if he is not selected at the party’s May 10 convention in White Plains.

David Spano, a 57-year-old former mechanic, made his announcement at Trump Park Residences in Shrub Oak, where he now resides.

County Legislator Ken Jenkins of Yonkers had announced his candidacy last August.

State Assemblyman Tom Abinanti, a Democrat who represents Mount Pleasant and Greenburgh, said he has not decided whether to run for county executive.

Bill O'Reilly, a campaign spokesman for Astorino, said, "There's a time for politics and a time for governing. This is a time for governing."

"County Executive Astorino looks forward to a series of healthy, respectful debates in the Fall with whomever emerges from the Democratic Primary," O'Reilly said.
