SCARSDALE, N.Y. - Scarsdale residents remain shocked following the first murder in the village in nearly 40 years.
Manhattan attorney and CPA Julius Reich, 61, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder on Wednesday after police responded to their multi-million dollar Lincoln Road home to find his wife, Robin Goldman, dead.
The homicide - the first in the village since 1977, according to police - had residents on edge Thursday, despite Scarsdale Police Capt. Thomas Altizio emphasizing that “there are no threats posed to the community.” He called the incident “domestic” in nature.
“It’s just strange, really. You hear about this happening in other places, but never around here,” Scarsdale resident Julie Evans said. “It’s shocking to have all this attention in town.”
Reich was arrested late on Wednesday and is currently being held without bail at the Westchester County Jail. He is due back in Scarsdale Village Court on Tuesday, Jan. 26. According to reports, Reich had petitioned for divorce in August of last year, which was still pending.
The last homicide in Scarsdale took place 39 years ago, when Yale graduate Richard Herrin bludgeoned his ex-girlfriend Bonnie Garland - then a senior at the university - with a hammer while she was asleep in her parents' home in Scarsdale. He was convicted of first-degree manslaughter.
Although he noted that he didn’t know the couple personally, Scarsdale resident Steven Leonard was surprised that one of his neighbors would be able to commit such an act.
“I’ve lived here for most of my life, nothing like this has ever happened before,” he said Thursday morning. “It’s such a fantastic place to live, you don’t expect this to happen.”
Shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday, Scarsdale police responded to 50 Lincoln Road after receiving an emergency 9-1-1 call reporting that a woman had been “seriously injured.”
According to police, first responders with the department and Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps were on the scene within three minutes, where Goldman, a prominent pediatrician at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, was discovered.
At approximately noon, forensic investigators from the Westchester County Department of Public Safety and members of the District Attorney’s Office joined the Scarsdale police investigation in the Heathcote neighborhood. Their investigation continued well into Wednesday night.
The "Scarsdale Diet Doctor" murder case in 1980 involving Jean Harris and Dr. Herman Tarnower occurred at Tarnower's residence in Purchase.
