Richard Cass, 54, an electrician with the agency, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with fourth-degree felony arson following the fire that destroyed the New York State Thruway Larchmont salt shed.
According to the New York State Police, the Pittsfield, Massachusetts resident “was at the salt shed after business hours, where he recklessly started a fire that ultimately destroyed the salt shed and several pieces of Thruway heavy equipment.”
At approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, fire broke out at the Thruway storage barracks, sending smoke billowing into the air that could be seen throughout New Rochelle. Firefighters had the blaze quickly knocked down, but multiple explosions were heard by several nearby neighbors.
Cass was released on his own recognizance, and is due back in the Mamaroneck Town Court on Monday, Aug. 31. A mug shot of Cass was not readily available.
