Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, an eighth grade student was stabbed in the vicinity of Centre Avenue, potentially by one of his classmates, who has been taken into custody.

Officers responded to 270 Centre Ave., where they assisted the 14-year-old victim, who was transported to Jacobi Hospital. The injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

According to New Rochelle Police Capt. Robert Gazzola, the assailant was charged as a juvenile delinquent with second-degree assault charges. He has been released to his mother's custody and is due back in Family Court later this week. The knife used in the assault has not been recovered.

In a statement, Gazzola said that because the incident involved two juveniles, their identities will not be released. He stressed that the incident occurred away from the school while the students were walking to class, not on school grounds.

“Although it is early in the investigation, it appears that another student, a 13-year-old male, is the suspect in this incident,” he stated. “He is in the custody of our Youth Officers and the investigation is ongoing.”

Gazzola noted that the investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information involving Wednesday’s stabbing can contact the New Rochelle Police Department’s Youth Office at (914) 654-2318.
