On Thursday, acting Westchester District Attorney James McCarty announced that Bronx resident Carlton Brown, 32, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of first-degree manslaughter earlier this year.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 31, 2014, Brown alerted police that a child was in danger in Mount Vernon after falling off of a bed. The toddler was taken to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital for treatment. The following morning, she was transferred and admitted into the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx.

According to the District Attorney’s office, “medical personnel from both hospitals called in reports to the New York State Central Registry. The Mount Vernon Police were subsequently alerted and detectives were assigned to investigate when the victim passed away two days later.

A day after the toddler’s death, an autopsy performed by the New York City Medical Examiner’s office determined that the cause of death was abusive head trauma and the death was ruled a homicide.

In court, Brown would later admit to subjecting his victim to blunt force trauma about her head and forcibly shaking her body, causing her to sustain abusive head trauma, retinal hemorrhages, which were ruled the cause of death.

Brown has been remanded to the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections.
