William Smith of Hopewell Junction was killed when he struck the center median with his 2003 Ford Taurus around 7:40 p.m., then veered across three lanes and hit the guardrail, said Trooper Melissa McMorris, New York State Police spokeswoman.

Smith was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital in Cortlandt, where he was pronounced dead, McMorris said.

It is unclear if a passenger in the car was injured.

Although the cause of the crash remains under investigation pending an autopsy and toxicology results, a preliminary investigation indicates he may have suffered from a medical emergency, McMorris said.
