All it takes is a simple phone call to the police desk to provide the information and an officer will make a physical check of the property, including checking windows and doors to make sure they are locked and that no one has broken into the home.

To take part, residents will need to provide a phone number, or the number of an emergency contact.

Department officials said the service is designed to offer residents "peace of mind" while on vacations or holiday times when homes may be left unattended for long periods.
