John F. Salimbene, a beloved Scarsdale doctor, was reported missing after a fire broke out at his home Sunday afternoon. His wife, Marie, was seriously injured but is recovering in the hospital, according to a report by lohud.com.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The 85-year-old family physician’s medical offices were located in their 174 Boulevard home.
Condolences poured in from friends, colleagues, patients and others after it was announced that Salimbene’s body had been recovered from the rubble Monday afternoon.
In a post on Facebook, Tuckahoe police said Salimbene “cared for the sick and injured members of the department and their families with skill, kindness and compassion.”
“It was fitting that his office was in his home because he made each of us feel like we were part of his family,” the post added.
Last spring, the police department presented Salimbene with a plaque declaring him “Tuckahoe Police Surgeon Emeritus.”
“He will forever be our doctor and our friend. May God bless him, Mrs. Salimbene, his children, grandchildren and the all those that loved him,” the police post said.
The couple had seven children and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Salimbene were set for 10 a.m. Monday, Dec, 12, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 8 Carman Road, Scarsdale. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, and 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Westchester Funeral Home, 190 Main St., Eastchester.
