BRONXVILLE, N.Y. Joseph A. Spillane of Bronxville died June 24. He was 89.
A retired New York Police Department sergeant, Spillane served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, seeing action in the Battle of Normandy and Iwo Jima.
After the war, Spillane joined the NYPD, where he served 23 years. He was also employed by Celanese Corporation for 20 years and Inwood Lounge for 15 years. He was married to the former Marion Dowling.
Spillane was also the owner of estates in Rockaway Beach, N.Y. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York chapter of the American Society of Industrial Security, which has since renamed the honor in his name.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; two daughters, Susan (Dennis) O'Hanlon and Marianne (Peter) Stuebe; four sons, Joseph (Patricia), Robert (Carol), Kevin (Mary Jane) and Michael (Joan); three brothers, Charles, Francis and Michael Spillane; two sisters, Elizabeth Gerson and Margaret Swanberg; 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas; and his parents, Michael and Margaret Spillane.
Fred H. McGrath and Son Funeral Home in Bronxville is handling arrangements. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church in Bronxville.//
