James H. O'Meara, 93, Of Bronxville, Retired Manager, U.S. Postal Service

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - James H. O'Meara of Bronxville died Nov. 5. He was 93.

O’Meara was born in 1921, in Manhattan and moved to the Bedford Park section of the Bronx at age 11 where he lived for many years. He relocated to Bronxville to raise a family. He retired in 1980 as manager of Inwood Station in Manhattan after many years of service with the U.S. Postal Service. After his retirement, he had a second career as a vault attendant at Chase Manhattan Bank in Manhattan. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. He was a parishioner of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Fleetwood.  

He remained active in many organizations, including VFW Post #375, Knights of Columbus Council #410 in Mount Vernon, National Association of Postal Supervisors, Emerald Society, Holy Name Society, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Anchor Club. He was a member of Toastmasters International.

O’Meara is survived by his daughters, Noreen Shanbacker (Ed) of Bethesda, Md., Joan Winant of New York., Marelle O'Meara (partner, Debra Chadroff) of Portland, Ore., Patricia Slattery (Bill) of Hopewell Junction; son, Bill O'Meara (Peggy) of Washingtonville; four grandchildren; sister, Marie Madigan; a nephew; and many of his wife’s Irish family. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen; and son-in-law, Riv Winant.

Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 7 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at F. Ruggiero & Sons, Inc., 732 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers (914) 375-1400  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at St. Peter & Paul Church, Mount Vernon, with Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
