Croton Fire Department Mourns Loss Of 73-Year Member Salvatore Vasta

Salvatore J. Vasta, Jr. of Croton-on-Hudson, a longtime member of the Croton Fire Department, died on Saturday, Nov. 11. He was 89.

A 73-year member and former captain of the Harmon Engine Company No. 3, Vasta married his wife Patricia In 1951, and together they raised nine children. 

A master mason for most of his life, Vasta also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and lived in Croton-on-Hudson his entire life. In 2008, Croton-Harmon High School presented Vasta with a high school diploma. 

Vasta was also a member of IUOE Local 137, The Knights of Columbus, Boy Scout Troop 25, and The Holy Name of Mary Parish.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; brother Frank; children: Sally (Robert); Thomas (Leslie); Robert (Kathy); Anthony (Carol Ann); Salvatore (Linda); Frank (Renee);  Joseph (Pennie);  Michael (Sharon), and Patricia; 15 grandchildren: Anthony, Kenneth, Jill, Robert, Mary-Katherine, Meredith, Benjamin, Christopher, Amanda, Madison, Mason, Nicholas, Ava, and Leeanna. Also, three great-grandchildren: Keegan, Makayla, Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Josephine, brother Angelo, and granddaughter Rachel Antunovich.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m., at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St., Croton-on-Hudson. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Holy Name of Mary Church, Croton. Burial will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery in Ossining.
