YONKERS, N.Y. - The City of Yonkers is getting greener.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the completion of more than $400,000 of clean energy projects throughout the city, including new solar and wind-powered lighting at the popular John F. Kennedy Marina.

The project is part of Cuomo’s “Five Cities Energy Plans” initiative, which is designed to increase energy efficiency and clean energy resources in the state’s largest cities.

According to officials, the 17 new wind and solar-power lights that surround the marina, will ensure the marina is energized even during large-scale power outages and protect the lights from storm damage and flooding. They replace lights that were destroyed by flooding and storms.

“To reach our ambitious clean energy goals and be a leader in addressing climate change, we must invest in clean, energy-efficient projects in our highest population centers," Cuomo said.

"City-State partnerships on energy-saving projects, like these in Yonkers, demonstrate that New York is at the forefront of the clean energy effort. It is forward-thinking, clean energy projects in our larger cities like Yonkers that help New York continue to set a bold energy example for the rest of the country.”

Yonkers officials also unveiled plans to utilize electric vehicles in the city’s municipal fleet and charging stations that will be installed throughout the city.

“Just a few years ago Yonkers became the first city in New York to cut its energy usage drastically by replacing all 12,000 city streetlights with LEDs," Spano stated.

"Working with (Cuomo) and the New York Power Authority, today Yonkers is once again leading by example in energy efficiency by illuminating a waterfront that's completely off the grid using wind and solar power. These projects build on our progress in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring a sustainable future for Yonkers."
