Brancato said he and Armento were searching for drugs when they broke into a friend's home in the Bronx, the report said.

The robbery attempt woke up an off-duty police officer Daniel Enchautegui, who lived next door and he shot Brancato, who was unarmed, the report said. Armento then pulled out a gun, shot and killed Enchautegui, the report said.

Brancato and Armento were both arrested, and Armento was eventually sentenced to prison for murder and Brancato was convicted of attempted burglary.

Brancato says he is a changed man and that a near-fatal overdose in prison helped him beat his addiction to drugs, the report said. He spends his free time talking to the community about the dangers of heroin and is working on his acting comeback, the report said.
