Westchester End Of Life Coalition Hosts Decision Day

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- April 16 has been designated as National Healthcare Decisions Day by the Westchester End-of-Life Coalition.

Along with other national, state and community organizations, the Westchester End-of-Life Coalition  is leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of being prepared with advance directives for health care decision-making.

For the seventh year in a row WELC, in conjunction with the Westchester Library System, is providing trained volunteers in local libraries (see list below) as part of its Everybody Needs a Proxy campaign. The volunteers will answer your questions and help you complete the New York State Health Care Proxy.

The Health Care Proxy allows you to appoint someone you trust to make health care decisions for you should you lose capacity to make decisions yourself. Everyone age 18 or older should have a signed Health Care Proxy.

“As a result of National Healthcare Decisions Day, many more people in our community can be expected to have thoughtful conversations about their health care decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known,” said Christina Staudt, president and co-founder of WELC. “Fewer families and health care providers will have to struggle with making difficult health care decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient, and health care providers and facilities will be better equipped to address advance health care planning issues before a crisis and be better able to honor patient wishes when the time comes to do so.”
