Waverly School Wins $500 from Daily Eastchester

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Daily Eastchester delivered a $500 check to the Waverly School today. Associate Publisher Cathleen Stack presented the check to PTA President Valerie Quinn and Principal Dr. Jeff Melendez.

"We started this contest with schools in mind. We know that times are tough and budgets are tight," Stack said. "We wanted to do something to give back to our local schools." Waverly School won $500 because they had 500 members of their school community sign up to The Daily Eastchester as part of the Better Schools Bonanza.

The Daily Eastchester is part of Main Street Connect which operates 31 free websites in Westchester County in order to provide comprehensive and reliable coverage of local news, sports and events. PTA President Quinn said she sent reminder email blasts to the school community on a regular basis to remind them to participate. The school serves children in kindergarten and first grade for the entire Eastchester school district.

Quinn said the funds will go to support programs for the children such as a recent visit to the Greenburgh Nature Center. "This is just the beginning of the fund raising efforts we plan to do for the kids," Quinn said. "We want to be able to fund all of the things they need."

Dr. Melendez gave Quinn and the other parents in the school all of the credit. "I gave them the okay and the PTA made it happen," Melendez said.

Stack agreed that it is the great pleasure of Publishers Carll Tucker and Jane Bryant Quinn to support parents in their quest to provide the best and richest education possible.

"Parent groups are some of the most dedicated organizations in our community, and we at Main Street Connect share their desire and their commitment to improve schools," Stack said. "As a local news organization, we understand that education is at the core of a community. The backbone of any solid community, is a solid school system. The Better Schools Bonanza is our way of reaffirming our commitment to the schools of Westchester County."
