Tuckahoe Edges Haldane for Class C Title

Alex Menendez’s head must be spinning.

With graduation just weeks away, the Tuckahoe High School senior completed a triple-sweep of sorts Wednesday night, leading the Tigers to a 4-3 victory over Haldane in the Section 1 Class C championships game at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, while being a member of his third Section 1 title as a senior.

Melendez , who allowed two runs and five hits over five innings to earn the victory on the mound and drove in two of the Tigers four runs, quarterbacked the Tigers Section 1 and state champion football team in the fall, played guard for the Section 1 champion basketball team in the winter and finished the trifecta of titles with his spring baseball team.

Tuckahoe defeated its Class C rival Haldane in football, basketball and now baseball this year to win all three titles.

“They played us pretty tough,” said Tigers coach John D’Arco, who doubles as the football coach. “After beating Haldane in the others sports we knew they would be tough to beat. We left guys on base  through the game and they hung in. After winning 19-1 in the semifinal, I told the guys not to take things for granted.  I was disappointed in that – we should have scored when we had the opportunities, but the win is wonderful.”

Two other members of the baseball team, Jason Feuer and Nick Reisman, were on all three Section 1 championship teams, and Jaime Maldonado, Brian O’Toole, Peter Costa and Jarrett Sommer played football or basketball also.

The Tigers, now 14-6, move on to the State regional playoffs where they will play Section 9 S.S Seward with a chance to advance to the state semifinals.

Down 2-1 after three innings, Tuckahoe scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Haldane added a run in the sixth to make it close. Pat Luisi had two hits and an RBI and Brian O’Toole drive in a run for the Tigers.

L.J. Gallo relieved Melendez in the sixth inning and allowed one run in the sixth but held the Blue Devils scoreless the rest of the way to earn the save.
