Now Simone is asking for help after two thieves broke into the facility last week and stole thousands of dollars and gifts intended for local families who have fallen on hard times.

"We are devasted and need the community's help to overcome this," she said.

As word has gotten out about the theft, donations have been coming in each day, but with Christmas right around the corner and the cold weather coming, Simone is worried she won't be able to help someone in need.

Currently, the organization will pay for gas in the winter and electricity in the summer, as well as help with gifts for children at Christmas and food for the hungry.

"Who does this type of thing?" Simone asked.

Right away the organization, a registered 501(c)3, is in need of an immediate influx of money to recover and get back on their feet so they can get back to helping the families who need them, she said.

A thrift store/donation center at 1736 Front St., Yorktown Heights, run by the organization, helps fund their efforts and is home to the group's headquarters.

Simone was born and raised in Yorktown Heights. She founded and formed Y.L.I.A. in August 2011. For as long as she can remember she has been volunteering and helping people.

"It is always a little easier getting through those difficult times when there's someone walking through them with you," she said.

To help recoup the lost money, Simone has started a GoFundMe site and is taking donations through PAYPAL
