Sidewalk Sale a Success in Bronxville

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Thanks to Barbara Amar of the Silver Spoon, most of the rain stayed away during the annual sidewalk sale held in Bronxville on Saturday."It's because I put up the tent," Amar said with a laugh. "If I put up the tent, the rain will stay away, no tent, we would have lots of rain."Amar was just one of the store owners who put out tables with lots of sale items in the annual event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce."We put out a combination of old stuff, but we added a few surprises,"Amar said of her store which features clothing and toys for children.Chamber Executive Director Peggy Conway said she had traveled up and down Pondfield Road and was happy to see most store owners busy with customers."We had a good crowd, okay weather and lots of success with this event and all of our outdoor event this year," Conway said. "We are all so pleased about the support from our community."Down at the east side of Pondfield Road at the home of the Womrath book store for the last 73 years, owner Eugene Sgarlata has participated in the semi-annual event for all of the 27 years he has owned the store."Oh we love the sidewalk sale, it's always brings new people to the store," he said. But two familiar faces stopped by to see Sgarlata, Eastchester Town Board members Joe Dooley and Glenn Belitto"I am delighted to be here," said Belitto, who lives in Bronxville. "It is so great to see our residents support our local businesses."Dooley took advantage of the sales and looked for a gift."There are so many great small places to shop, I am going to try to find a gift for my daughter. It's her birthday today," Dooley said.On Park Avenue, Joyce Mooney traveled over from Yonkers to hit the sale racks at Weezie Ds."I love this store, I shop here all the time," said Mooney. "But it's great to catch the sale."Weezie herself was adding things to the $3 and under the accessory table and the rack of clothes that were selling for under $20."It's a little chilly and it may rain, but we love the sidewalk sale, if we have to we will just move the sale inside."
