On Thursday, Paulin announced that she secured a million dollar grant through the New York State and Municipalities Facilities Program to assist with flood remediation along the Hutchinson River.

The initiative will benefit Scarsdale, Eastchester and New Rochelle, improving a stretch of the river that will “improve bank stabilization and remove years’ worth of overgrowth and impediments” along the coast. It is estimated that more than 100 properties in the area will benefit from the project. According to officials, there is no timetable for when the project will be completed.

Paulin recently joined Assembly Speaker Carl Beastie, Scarsdale Mayor Jonathan Mark and New Rochelle Mayor Bramson to tour the areas that will be effected by the upcoming project.

“Flooding has been a chronic issue in these three communities,” she said. “This project will make a big difference in the lives of my constituents who have been impacted by repeated flooding.”

Bramson noted that flood remediation has been a hotbed issue in New Rochelle in recent years.

“Addressing severe flood conditions around the Hutchinson River has been an important inter-municipal priority for years, but solving the problem is both costly and complex,” he said. “Now, thanks to (this) effort, we have a much better chance to make improvements and provide residents of the affected neighborhoods with long-awaited relief.”

According to officials, the project will replace four culverts along the river, and includes the cleaning and de-silting of shores and banks of nearly one mile of the Hutchinson River bed.

“The village of Scarsdale is very pleased with the announcement of the one million dollar grant,” Mark said. “These improvements will remove pollutants from entering the downstream receiving waters while facilitating the storage and flow of water mitigating long standing flooding on public and private property.”
