TUCKAHOE, N.Y. It's beginning to look like Christmas in Depot Square thanks to the arrival of the tree.
Mayor Steve Ecklond said that it took a crane, half a dozen of the village's Department of Public Works staff and another half a dozen volunteers from Tuckahoe's Lucente Landscaping to get the tree into place.
Donations made by the Generoso Pope Foundation, and Lucente Landscaping, got the tree from Winterhill Road, which is near Assumption Church, to Depot Square.
"It was quite a job, cutting it down, then transporting it without hitting any of the power lines, and then putting it up and securing it in place," Ecklond said. "We wound up having to take off about 20 feet from the tree."
Ecklond said the tree weighs 10,000 pounds and is larger than any tree the village has ever had.
"It's a beautiful tree, " Ecklond said. "And it's going to look even better when the lights are on.
Ecklond said DPW Superintendent Frank DeMarco and his crew will begin to place more than 2,000 lights on the tree. The official tree lighting will be on Saturday, December 3 at 6 p.m.
