WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- In his first week on the job, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is closely monitoring the ongoing ‘bomb cyclone’ storm with the Commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services John Cullen and his team at the Hudson Valley Transportation Management Center in Hawthorne.
“We are working in conjunction with State and local officials to keep constant watch over all weather, travel, and power outage conditions in Westchester,” Latimer said Thursday.
In addition to higher than expected snowfall, Latimer said, "what is of most concern is the high level of wind and wind gusts making for dangerous conditions.
"We will be monitoring our roads and bridges to ensure safest possible passage – but if you do not have to leave your home don’t. In the case of any power outages, have a plan and stay informed. If possible, check on elderly neighbors and family members to help make sure everyone is safe.”
Latimer held a media availability earlier Thursday where he outlined the status of County roads, services and the airport – which are all currently operating under snow procedures.
The Office of Emergency Management (OEM), a division of DES, is responsible for coordinating Westchester County's response to requests for emergency disaster assistance from municipalities throughout the county.
“Our office is tasked with keeping continual contact with officials on all levels so we have the most up to date information possible for the County Executive to make the necessary informed decisions on safety measures related to the storm,” said Cullen. “Governor Cuomo has declared a ‘State of Emergency’ for Westchester and we encourage residents to heed the warnings of officials on all levels. We will be frequently speaking with all level of government, as well as energy and transportation companies in Westchester, to monitor any changes so we can respond in the fastest and safest way for residents.”
