Gas Shortage Causes Long Lines In Bronxville

BRONXVILLE N.Y. – Bronxville's Palmer Avenue was congested with vehicles, deafened with honking and left without a place to park as motorists waited in bumper-to-bumper traffic Thursday morning to get gas in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Commuters from all over have been filling up their vehicles since Saturday, said Anibal Yamin, manager of the BP station at 50 Palmer Ave.

"It's been constantly busy, in fact so busy I can barely talk to anyone," said Yamin. "This is the only gas station in Bronxville, so before and after the storm hit it seems that just about everyone wanted to fill up their tank. Whenever big storms come people always want to be sure they can get to where they need to go to."

There used to be other gas stations in Bronxville, said Bronxville resident Murdoch McBride.

"I have about three-fourths a full tank of gas, so coming in wasn't a necessity, but I just wanted to stay on the side of caution," said McBride. "I got here at a good time so I only had to wait about six minutes, and it was well worth it. They really do have great customer service here."

The small gas station has attracted motorists from beyond Bronxville, including Michelle Weigand, a Yonkers resident.

"Most of the gas stations that I've seen around me are either closed or without gas," said Weigand. "I waited a little while to be served, but the line was nothing compared to what I've seen in some parts of Yonkers."

The Bronxville station still has gas, but at the rate it's pumping may be out soon, said Yamin.

"I hope we don't run out of gas," said Yamin. "I ordered more yesterday, and I ordered some today. I can only hope it comes in because there's not many places around here and these people have places they need to drive to."
