EASTCHESTER, N.Y. The indoor track team at Eastchester High School is doing a different kind of workout this week. Members of the team are spending their lunchtime selling T-shirts to donate proceeds to the Alzheimers Foundation.
Coach Bryan Johnson said he is so proud of his team. "I am really lucky," Johnson said. "I get to see them in the classroom, I get to see them competing and I get to see them working hard for the benefit of a good cause."
Johnson said that at homecoming events a few weeks back he noticed some of his fellow teachers wearing a Tshirt he and his team had sold two years ago to benefit cancer.
After watching a close family friends health decline from Alzheimers in the last year, he asked his team if they wanted to do a fundraiser.
"This is a disease that not a lot of people talk about," Johnson said. "It's a disease that still requires a lot of research."
Johnson said when he approached his team, they mobilized and sprang into action. "To see them get so passionate about this, makes it all worth it for me," he said. "It's just amazing to see the whole team get behind this cause."
The T-shirt sales will continue, mostly during lunchtime, through Dec. 6. In addition to the support of his students, Johnson said the support for the faculty and administrators is also significant.
"Everyone in this school has such as sense of compassion and care for each other," Johnson said. "It really makes Eastchester High School a special place."
