Eastchester Teacher Dances and Sings With Kids

EASTCHESTER,N.Y. -- About eight years ago, Jackie Freimor was a new mom working at a public relations firm in the Manhattan.

Looking for a way to spend time with her baby, Freimor found a class held on her only day off where she decided to take her daughter. But she was dreading it.

"I expected to hate it," Freimor said of the movement and music class she signed up to. "I thought children's music was uncool."

But Freimor, who plays guitar and piano, and who has a background playing and singing in rock and roll bands actually liked the class. In fact, she was such an enthusiastic participant, the owner of the studio suggested she take a teacher training class and even offered to pay for it if Freimor would agree to teach a class herself.

"The click in my head, on the first day I started the teacher training was almost audible," remembers. " I knew instantly that this is what I should be doing,"

So Freimor was teaching on that same day off, when about a year later that same teacher asked her if she would like to buy her business.

"I got myself a small business loan and here I am,"

She teaches in Scarsdale at her studio called Over the Moon Music and More , and she teaches classes in Briarcliff, Dobbs Ferry, Mount Kisco, Tarrytown and Tuckahoe.

Kids from infancy to age five come in and sing and dance accompanied by an adult. "We sing, we dance, we play instruments," Freimor said. "Our classes are informal but structured."

Class sizes are limited to between six and twelve kids and last for about an hour each and students sign up for a ten week session of classes, not just one or two classes. " Knowledge is incremental, and from the first class you see a real difference in the way the kids act in class even with the little ones," she said.

Now that the former ad agency exec has spent the last six years surrounded by children under age five she has no regrets.

"Music is the movement of pattern through time," Freimor explained. "I can't think of any way I would rather spend my time."
