EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Vernon Hills Shopping Center has about 20 garbage cans outdoors, all of the same size and neatly painted green. None of them, however, are for recyclables. Bottles, cans and Starbucks cups end up mixed with the general garbage.
Natalie Lavigna, a Yonkers resident and employee at a store in the shopping center, is one who thinks there should be recycling bins outdoors. She regrets that the bottles of Snapple tea she likes to drink during her breaks not always get recycled.
"Sometimes I take it home when I am not finished with it, otherwise it will go straight to the trash can," she said. "Bad, very bad."
Eastchester Town Clerk Linda Doherty said that, although the city considers recycling very important, it can't dictate the garbage cans the shopping center uses.
"It's private property," she said.
Nicholas J. Pepe, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bianco & Pepe Inc., the company that built and manages the shopping center, declined to comment on the issue. The only thing he said was, "You show me another shopping center as good as this one."
It's a good shopping center indeed. But some think it would it be even better with some recycling bins around.
