Dances With Joint Replacement Stars in Bronxville

BRONXVILLE, NY. -- It was an evening of dancing with the stars---stars of the joint replacement program at Lawrence Hospital.

Dottie Marciano, 81, of Mount Vernon, who had a hip replacement in 2008, stole the show as she danced the night away.

"I love to dance and have a great time," Marciano said. "I was not able to do that before my surgery and rehabilitation."

Hospital spokesperson Alisa Holland said life for many of the patients before surgery was painful.

"It was hard to get around for many of these people due to debilitating pain in their backs, legs and joints," Holland said. "Dancing used to be the last thing on their minds."

But last night, it was the only thing on Frances McGrail's mind, who had a hip replacement two years ago.

"I am having a great time," said McGrail, 86, of Yonkers, without missing a beat.

Coordinator May Anne Rittenhouse of Bronxville said the hospital does several hundred hip, knee and other types of joint surgeries each year.

"We do pre-operating education, where we discuss pain management and recovery, and then we arrange for physical therapy either in a facility or at home," she said. "We provide the same level and quality care as big New York City hospitals right here in our own community."
