County Legislator Burrows Looks Ahead

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Despite two challengers and an arrest during his last term in office, County Legislator Gordon Burrows won a fourth two-year term representing District 15 by a landslide in the November election. Burrows garnered more than 63 percent of the votes from his constituents who live in Yonkers and Bronxville. As he begins his eighth year on the County Board of Legislators, Burrows shared some of his thoughts with The Daily Bronxville.

What are your hopes for the County this year?

I hope that the new makeup of the Board of Legislators and the elimination of the supermajority will mean that we can work together in a more bipartisan way. I also hope that the labor unions recognize that they have an opportunity to avoid future layoffs by making some small contract concessions, like contributing to the cost of their health care.

2. Is there a special project in one of your districts that you are working on?

Protecting taxpayers from the overspending and overtaxing that was the hallmark of the previous administration has always been my primary objective and I will continue to work hard to reduce spending. I will also continue to work with my fellow elected officials like Mayor Marvin, as well as private entities, to address the flooding problems in our district. In the coming weeks, I will be announcing the formation of a committee to address our flooding problems in District 15.

3. Are you pleased at the outcome of the County Budget?

I think it was a better, more bipartisan budget process than we have seen in the past couple of years. While I don't agree with all of the spending that the Democrats put back into the budget, particularly the million-plus dollar slush fund for the Board of Legislators, we did achieve our goals of delivering no increase to the tax levy for the second consecutive year while maintaining the essential services the county provides.

4 Although it is very hard to choose, is there one or two organizations or groups you hope get more attention or support this year?

From an economic perspective, I think that all the county departments and non-governmental groups that receive county funding need to continue to find ways to do more with less. I think that the administration has demonstrated that if we work together to find creative and innovative ways of providing services we can have success without spending more and more taxpayer money every year.

5. Tell us something that we don't know about you?

I am huge sports fan...the teams I root for are St John's and Knicks basketball, The Rangers, Yankees and Giants. Go Big Blue!
