Cats Rescued Near Scene Of Westchester Killings Are Up For Adoption

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. --  Several cats rescued in Yonkers near the scene of a grisly massacre in which 25 cats were found hanging from a tree in plastic bags will soon be ready for adoption, according to the SPCA of Westchester.

The cats and kittens are being labeled as survivors of the animal cruelty case, which was discovered at Overlook Terrace in April and remains under investigation.

Daily Voice reported that necropsies of the dead cats showed that several of them had been bludgeoned to death.

SPCA Executive Director Shannon Laukhuf stated the rescued cats and kittens were living in, "squalid conditions," where they multiplied over the past few months.

Laukhuf stated the cats range from very friendly to feral, and many will be able to be placed in homes.

"While some of the cats are more social and can be adopted into homes, it’s critical to locate barn homes or adopters who have secure outdoor structures for those cats that are not suitable or happy living inside,” she said in a statement.

All of the cats were brought to the SPCA’s Simpson Clinic to receive immediate veterinary care and are being treated for eye infections and upper respiratory ailments. Once they are well enough, they will be spayed and neutered and then put up for adoption, according to the SPCA.

According to the SPCA of Westchester’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit (HLE), the investigation into the deaths of the cats at Overlook Terrace is still open and active.

“Our team in partnership with the Yonkers Police has been working around the clock to solve this case,” said HLE Unit Director Ernest Lungaro. “We are confident that the person responsible for this heinous act of animal cruelty will be brought to justice.”

The amount of reward money offered for information on the killings has reached approximately $23,250.

Anyone with information is urged to call the HLE’s confidential hotline at 914-941-7797.
