Bronxville Police Warn Local Merchants About Utility Payment Scam

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- The Bronxville Police Department is warning local merchants and residents to beware of a utility-payment scam.

Over the past several weeks, local merchants and residents have been contacted by an individual claiming to be from the utility company. The individual is claiming that payment is past due and that the resident or business owner must purchase a green dot pre-paid debit card for the amount due and call back with the account information.

Police have contacted local utilities and confirmed that none would request this kind of payment from their customers.

Con Edison urges customers to never provide a Social Security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it unless you initiated the contact and know the identity of the person you are speaking with.

If you receive a call from someone you do not trust and who is urging you to make a payment to Con Edison, hang up and check the legitimacy of the call by dialing 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).

Any business owner or resident who feels they have been a victim of this scam is asked to contact the Bronxville Police Department immediately.
