Hart was driving westbound on Route 3 Tuesday afternoon when a flatbed truck stuck the Orient Way overpass and a cargo container was dislodged, crushing the 39-year-old’s 2014 Honda behind him.
The victim was trapped in his car, and the instability of the cargo container made it difficult for police to reach him. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Hackensack University Medical enter.
Police closed Route 3 for several hours as they investigated and cleanup up the scene. All lanes were opened at approximately 3 a.m.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing. New Jersey driver Ali Mutakabbi, 50, is facing multiple motor vehicle violations. Following the collision, the condition of the bridge is also under investigation by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
“The New Jersey Department of Transportation engineers will evaluate the condition of the bridge and determine what repairs are required,” spokesperson Steve Schapiro stated. “Once the scope of the damage is determined, a schedule for the repair will be established.”
Hart, who served as a principal at home staging firm Sold With Style, was a contributor to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNBC and HGTV, according to the firm’s website.
On Wednesday, nearby neighbors mourned his death, calling it “a tragedy.”
“It’s a terrible way for someone to pass away. It’s an absolute tragedy,” Bronxville resident Abby Schmidt said. “Someone so young doesn’t deserve that kind of fate.”
