BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Bronxville High School alum Katie Welling was known for her infectious laugh, sense of humor and love of life.
On April 10, 2005, Katie, a 21-year-old member of the Class of 2002, lost her life in an off-campus fire at Miami of Ohio University. In an effort to cope with the devastating loss, Katie's friends from home organized an annual run in her honor.
For the fifth year in a row, the Katie Welling 2.5 mile Memorial Run/Walk will take place on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Registration is $30 and all the proceeds are donated to The Bronxville School Foundation. Peggy Williams, foundation executive director, said the race has become an event that Bronxville High School grads attend while visiting their families for the holiday.
"The class of 2002 was very small and was and is still very close," Williams. "It's a great family event for the Bronxville community to look forward to each year."
Williams said that there were 375 participants in last year's race and, based on pre-registration, they are expecting just as many runners and walkers this year.
"The proceeds help provide grants for the resources and innovative pilot programs aimed at enhancing the quality of the educational experience at Bronxville School," Williams said.
