Bronxville Deli Will Stay Open Despite Hurricane Sandy

BRONXVILLE N.Y. – The Bronxville landmark Lange's Deli hasn't closed its doors in the past 25 years, and doesn't plan on letting Hurricane Sandy break that record.

The deli hasn't been able to receive normal shipments from its major distributors because the storm has cut off transportation over major roadways, said Jens Langs, co-owner of Lange's Deli.

"I was up at 5 in the morning picking up produce, everything from milk, bread and cold cuts," said Langs. "I had to go to the Restaurant Depot in Port Chester to make sure we had everything needed for the storm.  We're a place that residents can rely on and can come to regardless what the weather is like outside."

Frank Maglietta was one of the many Bronxville residents who came to Langs to stock up on food for the storm.

"Just like the deli today, the supermarket was pretty crowed yesterday,” said Maglietta. “With a storm like this, flooding is expected, as are power outages, so people often try to stock up on food. For right now, I'm just trying to get some lunch."

During major storms in the past, residents of nearby towns like Tuckahoe have also relied on Langs to get them through, said Langs.

"I'd certainly like to keep the record going," said Langs. "Our first priority is to the safety of our workers, so I'm not closed to the potential of closing the store. But after that our responsibility is the residents of Bronxville or anywhere who are looking for a place to get some food in a time of need."
